Everyday Magic – Synchronicity, Symbols, and In-Sight
There is a stage in the metamorphosis of a caterpillar’s into a butterfly when the caterpillar digests itself inside the chrysalis. As Elisabet Sartoris describes it, when butterfly DNA starts to activate in certain caterpillar cells—delightfully named imaginal cells—the other cells see them as invaders and shoot poison at them. Clumped together, the imaginal cells survive as the old caterpillar cells dissolve in their own poison to become the nutrient-rich soup that nourishes the new form, the butterfly.
I can’t think of a better metaphor for these times.
My talk will explore the liminal realms where we’re still in caterpillar mind, we can see that our current mode of existence isn’t sustainable, but, lacking activated butterfly DNA, we can’t imagine the future.
In the fall of 1979, when I was in my 20’s and the cosmic understandings brought on by a heroic acid trip were fresh, I spent a day riding in the back seat of a car with an 80 or 90 year old Indian guru, the same Ganesh Baba with whom Dr. Keith Lowenstein studied at about the same time. Believing we had only that one day together, he pounded his cosmology into my head relentlessly. When we stopped for lunch at a diner in Watkins Glen, NY, he drew a diagram of it on a napkin. That cosmology has been the lens through which I have viewed existence ever since.
Drawing inspiration from the diagram, and from my studies in Jungian mythology at Pacifica Graduate Institute, as well the teachings of Alice O. Howell, sacred geometrician, archetypal astrologer, and fairy godmother, with whom I worked in the aughts, and others, my intention in this talk is to offer some understandings and tools for navigating in the soup.
Bio
Eve Neuhaus, MA, Mythological Studies, Pacifica Graduate Institute, is a lifelong advocate of using the imagination to explore the worlds beyond the three dimensions. Raised unconventionally by free-thinking Viennese refugees, she spent her summers in a Quaker intentional community and at an arts and music camp, where she found her tribe among the hippies.
When she was her late 20s, Ganesh Baba, Kriya Yogi and Naga Baba, changed her life forever. Thirty years later, she fulfilled his assignment to publish the manuscript he left her, updating it to suit the times. The Crazy Wisdom of Ganesh Baba was published by Inner Traditions in 2010.
Eve also studied Haudenosaunee culture at the American Indian Program at Cornell University, and sacred geometry and archetypal astrology with Alice O. Howell. In 2005, she published a middle grades fantasy novel, Journey to Mythaca, and in 2024, the first volume in a historical fiction trilogy, Two Suitcases: Red Vienna. The second volume, Two Suitcases: Underground, will be available soon.
“There is nothing contradictory between the experiences of the seers and the scientists except the direction of the flow.” Ganesh Baba
